Game Review: F1 22 – PS5

On July 1st, Electronic Arts and Codemasters unleashed upon racing gamers everywhere F1 22, the latest title in this respected simulation franchise. We also received the game and below you will find our thoughts about gameplay, presentation, game modes, and accessibility.
F1 22 is excellent! Aside from the glaring absence of a dedicated story mode, which is deeply missed this year, all the game modes that everyone loves are there and better than ever before.
But, as you probably already know, we prefer playing solo, so we spent some time with Career Mode and Grand Prix. Aside from these two, we also took a look at the new F1 Life mode.
F1 Life acts like a social hub, allowing us to showcase different collections of cars, clothing, accessories, and trophies. We are thrown directly into this game mode right at the first boot, so it’s recommended that we get familiar with it as soon as possible.
Luckily, all the cars that we collect aren’t just for show, as we can also take them for a spin on the track. We can take advantage of them ahead of Qualifying, or tackle special Pirelli Hot Lap events throughout Careeror My Team modes. Last but not least, we can drive them in special challenges and Time Trials.
When it comes to circuits, you’ll find the usual suspects such as Australia’s Albert Park, Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina, but with substantial changes and modifications. Also, the exciting new street circuit, Miami International Autodrome, is available from day one in F1 22.
The nice folks at Codemasters assure us that F1 22 includes brand new physics, handling, and tire models across each of the 10 F1 teams. All Formula 1 cars have been specifically redesigned for fast, close, and exciting racing, with radical new designs and 18-inch low-profile tires. All these changes are felt when on track as the cars feel heavier and better connected to the racing surface.
Thanks to the excellent implementation of the DualSense PS5 controller, you will feel every curve, every bump, brake, acceleration rush, and the adrenaline of racing in a Formula 1 car like never before.
The presentation is clean and sharp, there are new camera angles for some events that will make you feel like you are watching a TV broadcast. A new commentary track and a revamped user interface add to this feeling of freshness.
Although F1 22 comes with a few accessibility options, such as colorblind modes, larger subtitles, text to speech and speech to text for chat, there are no sound cues, menu narration or other helpful features that could assist a blind player to navigate the menus and the races.
In conclusion, F1 22 should satisfy the need for speed of everyone who played any of the previous games. The absence of a story mode is unfortunate, but the new changes implemented this year will make the gameplay fresher and even more entertaining.
F1 22 is available now for Xbox, PlayStation and PC!
