Hearthstone is epic, free and fully accessible for blind players with Hearthstone Access
For almost five years now, Hearthstone has been one of the few games I always boot up whenever I have some free time. Over the years I have really come to appreciate how fun, easy to drop in and how it is designed, how often it is updated, and how much there is to do. Blizzard keeps the game fresh with regular balance updates, seasonal events and three major expansions every year, so there is always something new waiting for players.
Before losing my sight, I spent countless hours playing Blizzard Entertainment games. Warcraft, Diablo and StarCraft were all the rage in the mid-90s – early 2000s and introduced me to some of my favorite gaming worlds. Going blind meant leaving many of those games behind, so I was really happy to discover that I could continue exploring Blizzard’s universe through Hearthstone and, more recently, Diablo IV.
If you have never tried Hearthstone before, I can tell you that it is Blizzard Entertainment’s free-to-play digital collectible card game set in the Warcraft universe. Players collect cards, build decks and battle against opponents from around the world in several different game modes.
To be honest, I don’t return only because the gameplay, but also because how immersive the entire experience is. The music is fantastic, the sound design is outstanding, and every hero, minion, spell, attack and game board has its own unique voices, sound effects and music. Together, they create an incredible auditory experience that makes Hearthstone just as enjoyable to listen to as it is to play.

Over the years, I have spent most of my time climbing the Standard ranked ladder and playing Battlegrounds. Blizzard has also introduced Battlegrounds Duos, where two players team up, share cards with each other during combat through the Portal mechanic, and work together against three other teams of two. I have also enjoyed playing through many of the solo adventures over the years.
The reason I can enjoy all of this independently is Hearthstone Access.
Originally created by Guide Dev and now maintained by a dedicated community of volunteers, Hearthstone Access is a free accessibility mod that makes Hearthstone fully playable with a screen reader. It adds spoken feedback throughout the game, allowing blind players to navigate menus, build decks, manage collections, complete quests, enjoy every major game mode and compete online independently.

Getting started is very simple. Install Hearthstone through Blizzard’s Battle.net launcher, then download and run the Hearthstone Access installer. The mod automatically patches the game and is designed to work with the English version of Hearthstone. Whenever Blizzard releases a major update, the community usually updates the mod shortly afterwards.
