Hello everyone. We received The Callisto Protocol for review and Alina has spent more than a few hours with it. As you can imagine, we are playing the game on PlayStation 5 and we like it a lot so far.
For those of you who don’t know yet, The Callisto Protocol is a survival horror video game developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton. The game is directed by Glen Schofield, who was a co-creator for The Dead Space series.
The Callisto Protocol is a narrative-driven, third-person atmospheric experience set 300 years in the future. We, as the player, will take on the role of Jacob Lee, a pilot who has the unfortunate fate of crash landing on the doorstep of Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary located on Jupiter’s moon, Callisto. He is unceremoniously arrested and thrown in a dark cell without any kind of explanation or reason. As it usually happens in these kinds of games, not long after our unlawful imprisonment, inmates begin to transform into monstrous creatures, the prison is thrown into chaos, and to survive, Jacob must battle his way to safety, but to escape Black Iron Prison, he must uncover the dark and terrifying secrets buried beneath the surface of Callisto.
You can expect brutal dismemberment of your enemy, or by your enemy, haha.
We have been using a combination of shooting and close-quarters combat because we needed to adapt our tactics to combat the ever-evolving enemies. It is absolutely mandatory to scavenge for resources in order to unlock new weapons, gear, and abilities. And to survive we must outrun, outgun and outsmart the creatures, the robots, and the prison. Only by doing this, we will be able to escape the horrors of Jupiter’s Dead Moon.
Alina has recorded for your viewing pleasure the beginning of The Callisto Protocol and in the video, you will be able to take a look at the menus, including the ones for accessibility, graphics, gameplay, and user interface.
We don’t have text-to-speech, but I am not angry because at least they did not advertise it, I’m just a little disappointed.
On a positive note, we have a high contrast mode, auto-aim, auto-targeting, the option to make the quick time events easier or even to auto-complete them, and a few other features.
The Callisto Protocol looks good, the facial expressions are quite natural, the animations run smoothly, shadows and light compete for attention and every time our protagonist dies feels like a fatality from Mortal Kombat.
The voice acting is excellent, the cursed prison haunts our every move with bumps, thumbs, and screeching sounds, and the creatures that we encounter attack us first with blood-curdling screams.
The atmosphere is dark, scary, and oppressing. We also love the implementation of the DualSense controller, as radio chatter comes out of the built-in speaker which elevates the level of immersion and we can confirm that the haptics are great.
Alina is extremely happy with The Callisto Protocol because she did not play Dead Space. She loves the atmosphere, the story, and the visceral gameplay, she continues to play although at times she is scared silly, and she promises to see this story to its end.
I can definitely notice a lot of similarities between The Callisto Protocol and Dead Space, but I think this is a good sign that confirms we have another great game on our hands. Fans of Dead Space have reasons to be excited as they get to survival horror titles in the span of fewer than two months.
We recommend The Callisto Protocol to everyone who loves the survival horror genre! If you like Resident Evil, Dead Space, or Alien isolation, you will love The Callisto Protocol.
Your always friend, Victor
