Game Review: The Expanse: A Telltale Series

Hello, dear friends! Alina and I started our weekend activities last Friday afternoon by embarking on a new interstellar adventure: playing the first episode of the recently released The Expanse – A Telltale Series on PlayStation 5. Developed by Deck Nine and published by Telltale Games, this game invites players to experience the exciting universe created by James S. A. Corey as an action-adventure narrative driven game, brought to you by veteran storytellers.
Some of you may know The Expanse from the books by James S. A. Corey or from the TV show originally created by Netflix and picked up by Amazon Prime Video later, I can tell you that Alina and I have listened to the audiobooks and are now making our way through the series on Prime Video. So, this game couldn’t have arrived at a more fortunate time!
As I am totally blind and I know that some of my readers are excited to find out if they will be able to play this, I want to get this out of the way as soon as possible: The Expanse is not playable by blind gamers, but it includes some accessibility features that will help other impaired players to enjoy it. More on that later in this article.
Immediately after booting up this excellent game, we were struck by the epic music and sound effects. The most important thing for fans when they play something based on an intellectual property that they love is to feel like they are in that universe, and I’m happy to confirm that this is the case with The Expanse. As the player, we suit up and settle in the magnetic boots of Camina Drummer, brought to life by Cara Gee, who reprises her role from the show, and explore the dangerous, treacherous and uncharted edges of The Belt aboard a spaceship named The Artemis.
What starts as a regular scavenging mission on a wrecked ship in zero-g environments quickly evolves into an unpredictable life-or-death situation where our protagonist needs to make difficult choices and shape Camina Drummer’s personality for the adventure to come. I won’t tell you anything else about the story, because I don’t want to spoil the experience for anyone, but I am happy to report that Telltale Games continues to bring us riveting and engaging action-adventure experiences.
We only got to play the first episode, because The Expanse will be released in episodic format with each new one becoming available every two weeks, and I can tell you that we are definitely hooked!
The gameplay uses classic action-adventure mechanics with the exception that this time it feels like an evolution of what Telltale did in the past. To convey the vastness of space, they factored in things like gravity. Floating in zero-g, walking on walls and new ways to navigate and open up exploration like never before.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series is not just another action-adventure game. It is a captivating journey into a rich and complex sci-fi world, where every choice matters and every consequence counts. The game features good graphics and smooth gameplay, but what really makes it stand out is the voice acting, with an impressive cast of talented actors who deliver authentic and emotional performances that immerse you in the story and make you care about the characters. The game’s music is composed by Jared Emerson-Johnson, who has worked on many other Telltale titles. His musical arrangements perfectly match the tone and mood of each scene adding even more to the enhanced level of immersion.
As I mentioned above, although I was not able to play the game myself, I’m glad to realize that others with different impairments will be able to do it as The Expanse: A Telltale Series arrives with a number of accessibility features in order to accommodate a variety of needs and preferences. You can turn on advance warnings for sudden bright lights, loud noises and intense action moments, and can toggle waypoints to always be displayed. I think that with a little more work, this can be transformed into navigation assist for blind gamers if the developer wants to make this title even more inclusive and accessible. As Alina was playing, we were discussing how such a thing can be implemented, so if anyone from the development team reads this and wants to give it a shot, we are here, ready and happy to help.
To reduce stressful situations and input times, you can choose to have an extra confirmation for major plot choices and can lengthen or even completely turn off the action event timer. There are also a number of color filters which can be applied for players with different vision impairments.
In conclusion, The Expanse manages to deliver much more than we expected. A great first episode that creates instant immersion in this dark universe and gives fans even more reasons to love it.
If you’ve never heard of The Expanse before, this game might be a good introduction to it. If you’re already a fan, you’ll enjoy seeing familiar faces and places. Either way, you won’t regret giving this game a try.
Happy Gaming everyone!
