Entertainment Review: Barbie – Warner Bros. pictures

From Doll to Human
This review was initially posted on my Patreon channel.
Hello dear friends! Yesterday Alina and I took some time from what was supposed to be a rainy Sunday morning to check out the Barbie movie at the Odeon Cinema in Oslo. To be completely honest with you, I had absolutely zero expectations going in, but as Alina wanted to see what all the fuss was about I decided to join her. Two hours later, I exited the cinema with a big smile on my face and completely impressed.
In case you’ve been living under a rock and had no access to the Internet there, Barbie is the latest movie from Warner Bros. Pictures, which in about two weeks managed to gather more than $500 million at the box office. The film was initially planned to be released in 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, the movie follows the adventures of Barbie and Ken, who are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they are forced by circumstances to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans. There are a lot of Barbies and Kens in the show, but Margot Robbie portrays the main Barbie and Ryan Gosling plays Ken.
I truly enjoyed the empowering messages found in the story, the actors who are doing a fantastic job, the funny moments, and the absolutely awesome soundtrack. Alina also loved the colorful visuals.
Yes, at times the Barbie scenario can be considered childish and puerile if you don’t pay enough attention to it, but if you do, you will discover that behind all of this pinkish veneer hides in plain sight some truth that the movie industry can only say in jest.
Nothing is off the table, things are said loud and clear and the overall message is one of positivity and empowerment for the millions of women who grew up trying to look as close as possible to one of these dolls.
As always, Alina did live audio descriptions for me in the cinema, but I enjoyed the experience so much that I will watch Barbie again when it will become available on HBO Max.
I did some research before posting this review as I was intrigued by the Barbie movie and I found out that Greta Gerwig said she was inspired by Toy Story, The Wizard of Oz, and The Truman Show when making the film. The film features cameo appearances by celebrities such as Beyoncé, Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, and Barack Obama as themselves. Aside from that, I think it’s super nice that Margot Robbie also served as a producer for the film and Ryan Gosling learned how to play guitar for his role as Ken.
Barbie has been nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Margot Robbie), and Best Original Song (“Barbie Girl” by Aqua).
So, if you are in the mood for a super amusing family movie that grabs our broken society by the throat and shakes it for all it’s worth, I highly recommend that you check out Barbie. It is a movie with a heart that far exceeds any expectations. The casting is perfect, the writing is brilliant, the script is good and the music is catchy.
Wishing everyone a great day and a fantastic week ahead!
