Artwork for stray gods the role-playing musical featuring a scene from the game, where Grace, the protagonist, is facing off against Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, in a musical duel. Supporting them is Aries and Persephone. The background of the image is a ruined temple with broken columns and statues.

Music is life and sometimes life is music

Hello, dear friends! This week, I had the pleasure of playing Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, a wonderful game developed by Summerfall Studios and published by Humble Games. Exactly as advertised, Stray Gods is a video game for musical lovers and a musical for video game lovers. It features a compelling story with unforgettable characters and a powerful plot driven by a sense of hope.

The action of Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is set in a modern fantasy world where Greek gods live in hiding among us. College dropout Grace is granted the power of a Muse, which she uses to find out the truth behind her predecessor’s mysterious death. As Grace, you’ll decide who she allies with, who she can trust, and who may betray her in this beautifully hand-illustrated roleplaying musical experience. Meet gods, feel the romance, and try to solve a murder while being the main star in exquisitely written and choreographed musical numbers composed and performed by award-winning artists! When you’re done with that you can start from the beginning and take multiple different pads which will of course lead you to other parts of the story.

The game also boasts an impressive voice cast that includes Felicia Day, Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, Troy Baker, Merle Dandridge and many other wonderfully talented artists.

Even more important and surprising for me as a Blind player is the fact that the game also packs an impressive array of accessibility features. Although it does not have menu narration yet, it has audio descriptions, the option to turn off timers, large subtitles, a lot of content warnings, and it can be easily played with OCR.

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical – A uniquely original and accessible interactive experience,

I used my Orcam device to make my way around the choices and I even created a video, which you can find on my YouTube channel and in this article, showing the first part of the musical adventure. The audio descriptions are delivered using text-to-speech. I hope that the game becomes so successful that the developer will bring in a professional voice artist to re-record these. When you have so many talented actors bringing all these wonderful characters to life, it is quite jarring when the audio descriptions come in and on ceremoniously cheap away at your immersion.

I don’t want to sound ungrateful for the accessibility features in Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, but I think having a real human being involved in describing the environments and scenes for blind players would add even more to an already wonderful experience. I needed help from Alina to set up the accessibility features as the menus are quite inaccessible, but that can be easily solved if a friend can help when they are visiting or through remote access such as SharePlay on PlayStation.

The gameplay mechanics are intuitive and accessible. At given times, multiple options are displayed on screen and these can be read with OCR. Most of the time, we have three choices accessed by pressing up, left, right, and even down on the d-pad and confirmed by pressing X. In some situations, there are more than three or four decisions on screen, but these also read quite well with OCR. Once chosen, the option disappears leaving you with only those that you still need to explore.

As someone who has played thousands of games before going blind, I was surprised by Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical. It’s a unique game that combines music and video games in a way that I’ve never seen before. I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to experience something new and unique.

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical Launch Trailer,

I want to congratulate the developer for implementing accessibility features in their game. I hope to see these being expanded upon in future updates. This shows how our beloved gaming industry evolves and changes for the better from year to year and now from month to month.

Finally, I want to say a big thank you to everyone involved with this project! You created something uniquely original, an interactive experience that delights, entertains, enriches our lives and makes our souls happy!

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is available now on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
