Entertainment Review: The Batman

This article has been posted as Early Access content for my Patrons last week.
Good morning friends! This Saturday afternoon we went to the movies after a 10 km long walk in the city.
We returned to the beautiful Odeon Theater in order to enjoy The Batman, another expensive Warner Bros Pictures production that follows the caped crusader, but this time with Robert Pattinson in the role of the famous vigilante.
At this exciting viewing, we were joined by one of our treasured friends in Oslo who is also a colleague of Alina‘s.. since the production is almost 3 hours in duration, we decided to fork out some extra cash and purchase the most comfortable chairs in the cinema and afterward we were very glad that we did. Jokingly I mention the fact that if this were produced by Disney instead of Warner Bros., they would probably have released it is a six-episode limited series on Disney+.
So, about The Batman. The movie is good, Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz are excellent as Bruce Wayne / The Batman and Selena Kyle / Catwoman. There are many other talented actors such as Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Andy Serkis is the endearing butler Alfred Pennyworth or Colin Farrell as the character who will become the Penguin, but I’m sad to say that none of them will entertain the audience with some riveting performance.
A word of caution to those who think that The Batman is nonstop action – it is not. There is a lot of character development, especially for the Riddler and for Catwoman, the action scenes are relatively rare because the scenario has Batman and Gordon trying to figure out all the riddles that The Riddler leaves around the city.
Speaking of Gotham, it remains the city at the edge of Night, dark, atmospheric, filled with crime, injustice, ruthless individuals that want everything for themselves and of course, corrupt cops in the Gotham City Police Department.
The movie opens with a brutal crime set up on a haunting rendition of Ave Maria and after that, there is a monologue delivered by Bruce Wayne explaining the state of the city. The city’s elite is hunted down and riddles are left at the crime scenes. What follows is an against-the-clock race to solve them and to stop the killer. The Batman plays out more like a mystery thriller than an action thriller.
Don’t get me wrong, there is sufficient action and it is well-executed, but those of you who have hopes that this is the next Dark Knight, should reconsider and recalibrate their expectations.
The production is instantly immersive and truly atmospheric, the cinematography is great, the music emphasizes each key moment and the sense of urgency is consistent throughout the movie. We enjoyed the soundtrack, although the different renditions of Ave Maria became tiring and obsessive at some points. A really weird thing was the feeling that we had when a specific theme was played because 80% of the notes in it sounded very much like the Darth Vader theme from the Star Wars movies. A strange and unlucky choice on the composer’s part, in my humble opinion.
So, The Batman is a good movie, but I won’t go as far as to say that it is great. Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz are perfect for the roles, but the secondary characters aren’t that special, remarkable or unforgettable, like those in the Christopher Nolan productions.
From what I understand we will probably see a trilogy featuring these characters and Warner Brothers have plans to create new TV shows with Lieutenant Gordon and the penguin for HBO and HBO max.
Since there is not so much action and not so many special effects I don’t think that it is required for you to watch The Batman at the cinema, but if you do, go to the bathroom before and don’t forget to get double the popcorn and the juice, because you will be on that seat for a long, long time.
I’m curious to find out what you think about the movie, if you saw it or after you do..
