Review: WWE 2K22 – PS5

La Lagartija Verde / The Green Lizard
After almost 30 months of waiting, the next game in the renowned WWE franchise is out now for fans all over the world to enjoy. With WWE 2K20 released in a deplorable state in 2019, and with WWE 2K21 completely canceled by 2K Sports, wrestling enthusiasts may be forgiven if they would be skeptical to give a chance to recently made available WWE 2K22, but rest assured, I’m here to tell you that WWE 2K22 is the best game in the series in a long, long time.
Absolutely every aspect of the game has received a significant upgrade in both quality and content. There are a lot of game modes for you to enjoy.
From the return of Showcase where we meet the man, the myth, the legend, Rey Mysterio and take part in his formidable career on the different stages of the Wrestling World, to MyRise which serves as the main story campaign offering the player the option to choose to create a male or female fighter and all the way to the MyGM mode that serves as a chance for anyone to become a manager, each has received a lot of attention from the dev teams at Visual Concepts.

Aside from local fights and multiplayer, we also have a cards collector mode in the style of the famous and, at the same time, infamous FIFA Ultimate Team, but here it is called MyFaction and as we are not interested in such things, we will leave it for later to give it a try.
We’ve spent time with the awesome Showcase mode, which plays out like an interactive documentary for Rey Mysterio’s professional life, complete with key moments being highlighted with seamless transitions from in-game action to real footage of the specific fights. We love it because it makes you feel like making part of his journey, and trust me, it’s filled with interesting events and it becomes even a little dramatic.
The MyRise campaign should keep anyone tied up for dozens of hours because it’s full of content and offers multiple paths throughout all the competitions available in the spectacular world of Wrestling.
The gameplay mechanics feel good, the controls are responsive and the animations look better than ever before in any previous WWE game.

Attacking is exhilarating, defending is intense and when you manage to combine the two in just the right way, the match feels just like the real deal. Almost all of the annoying mechanics from previous titles have been removed or improved in such a way that they are no longer a problem.
At first, it’s necessary for a gamer to get used to the controls and to the mechanics, but the learning curve is not that steep and it’s worth the while. The fact that the tutorial is not that well done can add to the confusion, but with a little patience, everything can be sorted out.
What it’s not ok with WWE 2K22 is that Visual Concepts seems not to realize that they need to add some accessibility options to the game. I’m not even talking about the hard stuff like menu narration or audio cues, but about doing their due diligence and implementing settings for larger menus, subtitles, and tutorials.
Alina has absolutely no problem with her vision, thank God, but she has a really had time making out what was written on the screen, and we are talking about a 55’’ TV here.

Even without accessibility options for the blind, I had a good time with WWE 2K22 thanks to the fact that being a fighting game, I can learn the controls and pay attention to the sound in order to confront my opponent.
Alina tells me that the game looks really good, with excelent graphics and detailed characters, stages, and a cinematic presentation.
The soundtrack is comprised of Hip Hop, Dance, and Heavy Rock tracks that will delight or annoy you. For us, it was like a 50 – 50 ratio.
There were almost no bugs, the levels load fast compared to previous games and it would have been nice to have a more robust feedback in the DualSense.
So, WWE 2K22 is the game that fans were waiting for. Bigger, better, good-looking, and with a wide selection of game modes on display, this should satisfy any and all Wrestling addicts out there.
