Entertainment Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Hello, dear friends. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has broken a lot of records in its first few weeks since released in cinemas, and as we are always on the lookout for a good animation that could make us smile, we thought to check it out.
On Sunday afternoon Alina and I made our way to the Odeon Theatre here in Oslo and after grabbing some popcorn and cotton candy we headed to the iSense hall and waited patiently for the show to begin.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is created by Nintendo in collaboration with Illumination Studios, and unlike the Sonic live-action productions, this is fully animated.
In this new take on the ’90s failed movie, the Mario Brothers, Mario and Luigi find themselves pulled from Earth to a new world filled with strange creatures. As if that wasn’t enough, there are warring factions and a mega-maniacal individual trying to become the supreme leader of all the worlds.
Yap, you guessed it, Bowser is the warlord and nothing will stand in his way of conquering the Mushroom Kingdom and marrying Princess Peach.
From here now on, Mario is the only one who can save the day and the princess, if she is not in another castle, of course.
The story is thin as ice, but enjoyable nonetheless. The animations are gorgeous, some of the worlds are truly magical, the voice acting is excellent and there’s a song that Bowser performs that I can’t get out of my head for three days now.
Another thing that deserves mentioning is the epic soundtrack that manages to successfully combine modern music with the classic Mario themes that we all know and love.
Fans of the Super Mario games will be happy to discover some of their favorite levels recreated in this movie. I can’t say that the Super Mario Bros movie is remarkable or memorable in any way, but at least it’s ok, fun, and ever so slightly pulls at our heartstrings with nostalgic moments and sincere laugh-out-loud scenes.
I think that if you are a Super Mario fan you should definitely check it out in a cinema.
I have to say that Alina enjoyed the movie more than I did, but that’s most probably because she could also experience the colorful visuals, not only the story, the music, and the voice acting, as I did. She did live audio descriptions for me during the entire viewing and it helped me better understand what was happening on the screen.
So, if you grew up playing Mario or are just looking for a good family movie, we recommend that you check out The Super Mario Bros. movie in a cinema or later in the year at home when it will be available on a streaming service, probably Paramount.
Happy watching everyone!
